 unabumali 3.0

Many moons have passed since TimeDesk got involved in the Bunabumali adventure. From a novice in African Affairs back in 2006, gradually a new vision for rural development emerged..

We followed an unconventional approach during touch times and we have all learned a lot, also from the solutions that failed. Based on those experiences we can now start round two of the challenge.

  • Recap from TimeDesk

Many moons have passed since TimeDesk got involved in the Bunabumali adventure. From a novice in African Affairs back in 2006, gradually a new vsion for rural development emerged, thanks to Norman and his family. Thanks for believing in my sometimes unconventional approach. It’s been touch times and we’ve all learned a lot, also from the solutions that failed. Based on those experiences we can now start round two of the challenge.

I praise Norman for his bravery of ignoring common (NGO) wisdom, and opting for a move forward without an MBA style Buisness plan. You’ve done it mate, you have shown you can do without all the writings.

Bunabumali,tumblr.com is now over 5 years old and was Norman’s first weblog, never used to coordinate the future of Bunabumali. That’s changing as of years change. when it will become bunabumali, com the offical on-line Buna newspaper.

Buna now has it’s own netbook pc and digital camera.

    • All local news will be published on Bunabumali, com and automatically republished on facebook and twitter, putting the latest progress direct in the face of of millions of people worldwide.
    • Local editor for the Bunabumali Chronicle
    • Norman is editor in chief
    • All Buna friends will be invited to become co-editor and interact direct with the folks in the village.

While facebook remains the prefered communicationplatform as that’s where we all meet, it’s not realy usefull in presenting the big picture and it’s progress. That’s what Bunabumali.com will be solving.

  • Greetings! I usually don’t do this type of solicitation but this is an emergency situation and we are trying to help people in Eastern Uganda in some small way as we can. Over 100 people are found dead, many still missing, and 6,000 families are in desperate need of food, clothing, shelter, beddings, and basic household supplies. A member of URF Kampala Chapter, Robbinah, lost 16 extended family relatives. We have identified a small community where she is from which can use blankets, food, and other supplies - her family has taken in over 30 people, others are camping at a nearby school and a sub-county offices. How we are responding: On Tuesday, our students at Hope Academy, teachers, URF staff and women’s group are going on a door to door campaign in the villages where we work in Masaka collecting corn/maize and beans. We want to empower local people to help each other. Everyone grows beans and corn/maize; so in Masaka there is plenty; everyone can give something. The students grew corn and are going to donate half of it (about 250kgs). We need about $500 to coordinate transfer of these supplies to those who need them. URF has received $850 from people of Pilgrim Church in Boston and this will buy blankets for over 170 people. URF is also putting in funds for 1,000kgs of corn flour for posho. With your help we can do more: - $5 = a blanket - $5 = 25kgs of corn/maize flour (feeding a family for half a month) - $10 = 5 mosquito nets - $20 = a mattress - $100 = 500kgs of corn/maize flour (feeding 50 people for half a month) - $200 = 1,000kgs of corn/maize flour (feeding 100 people for half a month) Also $10 buys 3 dozens of cups, $10 buys 5 sets of 8 saucepans, or $10 for 2 bedsheets) You can send a check to Uganda Rural Fund, 300 Fraser Purchase Rd, Latrobe, PA 15650. Or donate online http://www.ugandaruralfund.org Indicate “for emergency relief” Those in Uganda can donate by calling Robbinah 077-2570893 or Harriet 070-1640552 - cash or in-kind. Thank you very much. “Kampala, Uganda (CNN) — At least 106 bodies had been recovered Tuesday after massive landslides wiped out several villages around Mount Elgon on the Uganda-Kenya border, an army spokesman and local aid officials said. “In Butaleja, more than 6,000 households in four subcounties were affected by the flooding, and the area’s only two primary schools were washed away, Ntabadde said.” (CNN source - http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/03/02/uganda.landslide/

    )

“This used to be our home. My mother died here, my brother, the children and everybody,” said one villager, Seela Wazemba. “Nothing is now left in my life.” (BBC source article/video: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/8545005.stm )

    Budget: when we started: 0

Investment in small donations: €.4000.00 in 2 years

Total costs, including bankingcharges, bribes, transport & travel cost: €. 2000,00, money that could have deployed directly if we would have had the proper infrastructure to work together (over 800 friends Norman has runded up on-line)

The proper infrastructure is the realisation of on idea Ben had from the start, the creation of a Bottlenck Fund, that fills in all the micro gaps existing infrastructure keep creating with each new invention or introduction of new services.

Although I call it a fund, it in effect an alternative micro finance system, not onlly focusing on transferring money, but facilitating, barter, knowledge exchange and human creativity into a new kind of economic model. When finished it will be the bridge between Aid and economic development.

    Milestones:

November 2006: Ben meets Evert Groeneveld from Cleanwaternow, when he just started working for an on-line development aid initiative. That’s when I learned about Naiade, the potential impact if NGO’s and governments could be made aware tNaiade is one of the few sustainable solutions to provide the BOB market with clean drinking water.

May 2007 : Ben & Norman decide to set an example and start a journey of discovery how to reach a goal everybody said was impossible. We left the development initiative where we met up on-line and started our own social platform, together with a small group of other disappointed African entrepreneurs. This led to this great article written by Amedu Monday, the Hatman of Africa. Amedu gives a great account of the style of conversation and the impact my our strategic termite approach seemd to have, something I was unaware of in those days

Apart form working on Venue Africa, I spend a great deal of time looking into the problems long term unemployed people in Holland face when they try to escape the iron fist of social security. As bizar system that prevents people form solving their own problems. If I wanted to turn venu Africa into a success the folks in Africa deserved, I had to fight myself out of social security trap first. Thats why I I had to stop the African adventure for almost 5 months.

I had no more cash, no job and no means to support the internet platform I had crated using open source software. One by one the new found African friends went their own way, and all of a sudden io disappeared all together. One simple email to Norman telling him I would be back was the last I could do.

Norman will tell you his end of the story of how he kept going. here you read about my real life

Five months later I had found myself a small job, was no longer limited by the frustrated social security mess and had my freedom. Rebuilding the old platform was no longer an option so I started looking for a less complicated approach. That turned out to be tumblr.com. Bunabumali Chronicle was born
